Purchasing Manager
Responsible for the supplier selection, price and contract negotiation and delivery timing of significant purchase volume spanning commodities, packaging materials and key ingredients for the manufacture of cookies and crackers for multiple locations.
Position Responsibilities
- Selects suppliers, negotiates price and contracts, purchases and expedites materials for production, prevents excessive inventory and avoids stock shortages.
- Lead the development and execution of physical procurement strategy, supplier selection, cost reduction efforts, strategic sourcing and supplier initiatives, and employing risk management strategies.
- Assure the service and quality requirements of Richmond Baking are met, along with required innovation and product improvements.
- Responsible for following up on orders, verifying availability and delivery dates. Prioritizes, schedules and expedites delivery of materials to meet target dates.
- Serves as a liaison between the departments of Sales, Manufacturing, Quality and Purchasing to ensure adequate supplies of materials are available on hand when needed and materials meet quality specifications at the best value.
- Provide guidance to risk management consultants so they can implement hedging strategies.
- Prepares and presents commodity overviews to Vice Presidents and the President.
- Analyzes and reports purchase price variances to ensure adherence of suppliers to contractual obligations and sales pricing strategies.
- Works with Product Development, Technical Operations and Manufacturing to source new or improved raw materials.
- Maintains vendor performance history and updates computer system on current pricing.
- Proactively work with Manufacturing and Sales to resolve all supply chain issues.
- Manages strategic supplier relationships including periodic cross functional strategic supplier review sessions to drive overall supplier value improvement.
- Provide leadership, guidance and direction in the professional development of direct and in-direct reports.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- Requires five to eight years purchasing, contracts, negotiating or other relevant experience in a food manufacturing or commodity purchasing environment.
- Competent knowledge of manufacturing process including forecasting, production, packaging, and planning.
- Understanding and proficiency in futures and options to support Richmond Baking’s risk management activities.
- Excellent knowledge of material resource planning systems and spreadsheet software.
- Computer skills (min) – Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook.
- Good mathematical, oral and written communication skills, and excellent organizational skills.
- Deep knowledge of the food business.
- A team player; able to use strong communication, analytical and management skills to lead a diverse group forward.
- Demonstrated strengths in relationship building, problem solving and conflict management.
- 20% travel required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Basic Responsibilities
- Guide organization in Lean Systems implementation
- Plan, organize, and executes Kaizen events
- Implement and manage 5s processes
- Complete Value Stream Mapping processes
- Plan, organize and execute quick changeover processes
- Provide leadership and works among the Lean Steering Committee
- Promote Lean
- Conduct Lean training throughout the organization
- Execute, track, and take accountability for continuous improvement savings and results
- Participates as a member of the plant staff
Required Experience & Knowledge
- Minimum of 4 years experience implementing Lean processes in a manufacturing environment
- BS, Engineering or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing tool box
- Knowledge of continuous improvement
- Practical experience in Lean Systems implementation
- Position reports directly to Vice President
